What is Spelling To Communicate (S2C)?

Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) designed for individuals with autism and other motor challenges. Since all communication requires motor control, S2C shifts the demand from fine motor skills used in speech to more accessible gross motor movements. It teaches individuals to point to letters to spell words, gradually building purposeful motor skills. With consistent practice, many students progress from letterboards to typing on a keyboard. As motor skills develop, communication expands from simple to more complex, abstract expression. To learn more, see the S2C Overview and The Human's Guide to Supporting Autistics.
